The Rubik’s cube has been a symbol of the quirkiness and eccentricity of the 1970s since its inception in 1974. It has never been seen as a symbol of status, opulence, or wealth at least until now. Diamond Cutters International is honoring the 40th anniversary of the Rubik’s cube with a $2.5 million masterpiece. The diamond encrusted cube will be on display at the Liberty Science Center of the Rubik.
The iconic cube was invented in 1974 by Hungarian sculptor and professor, Emo Rubik. Originally, it was called the Magic Cube and experienced great success from the start. In 1980, it won the German Game of the Year special award for best puzzle and is widely considered to be the world’s best-selling toy, even to this day. As of January 2009, 350 million Rubik’s cubes have been sold worldwide. Everyone, no matter their age, gender or social status, has fiddled with a Rubik’s cube at one time or another. Many have played, but few have solved the puzzle, and those that have makeup a small percentage of the population.
Fred Cuellar, founder and CEO of Diamond Cutters International, created what the Guinness Book of World Records has recognized as the World’s Most Expensive Toy. Cuellar’s Rubik’s Cube is estimated to be worth $2.5 million and is made of 18 karat yellow gold with 25 precious stones per panel set in invisible settings. 185 karats of rubies, emeralds, sapphires, and white diamonds were used. The Rubik’s Cube designed by Cuellar is almost identical in appearance to the iconic cube we’ve all come to grow and love, with one main exception.
The Rubik’s Cube designed by Cuellar uses the color purple in replacement of the traditional orange. No photograph has ever been taken of the purple side of Cuellar’s version of the Rubik’s Cube, in an effort to prevent replicas from being made. Now that the secret is out, thousands are heading to the Liberty Science Center of the Rubik to see the work of beauty with their own eyes.
