An installation featured at Audio Visual Arts in New York last month, titled Making a Record, is not your typical exhibition of precious gemstones.

Melissa Dubbin and Aaron S. Davidson, the artists responsible for the innovative installation, selected a ruby, an emerald, a sapphire, and a diamond to be fashioned into styli that were then used to record the voice of a jeweler and gemologist, Karen L. Davidson, onto a record as she discussed the different gems. She then set each of the four gemstones in gold and used them to make pendants, which were worn by four participants, each of whom submitted statements about their experiences wearing the jewelry.

In conceptualizing this installation, the artists set out “to give shape and physicality to the immaterial.” And as the records, the pendants, and the participants’ observations are now housed in the installation, and the audio recording of Davidson’s musings plays throughout the room, they have certainly brought the immateriality of audio to life.

Listen to the interviews, see the pendant, and read more information about the installation.
